Lawn Care to Prepare Your Lawn For Spring
Do some cleaning
Clean up any leaves, twigs or other debris that has accumulated over winter is the first step in preparing your lawn for spring. Air blowers are easier than rakes. Conners states that debris can build up in lawn mowers and prevent fertilizers and other materials being properly absorbed into the lawn.
Apply fertilizer, preemergent, and weed killer
Pre-emergent is an herbicide that prevents crabgrass, and fertilizer should be applied to your grass in the spring. After six to eight weeks, you can apply the fertilizer again along with a broadleaf herbicide. Conners states, “You don’t want crabgrass to grow or you’ll have to fight it all season.” He points out that lawn care brands often offer pre-emergent as well as weed killer in one application. This will reduce your costs and time to apply.
Mow early and often
Mowing only once per week in spring is a big mistake homeowners make. He warns that if you allow the grass to grow too high, then it will stunt the roots and make it difficult for them to reproduce. To ensure a thicker and fuller lawn, mowing should be done every five days during the first six weeks depending on the weather. Call Conway Lawn Care Service if your time is limited. Pick a good, heavy mulch
After your lawn has been mowed, you can edge your beds and trim any branches that aren’t needed. Conway Lawn Care Service recommends hardwood bark mulches to ground wood chips that are brown dyed. They look better and last longer.
Prune the trees
It is difficult to see if there are dead branches in a tree unless you climb up on top of it. Dead branches can cause injury and property damage if they are not taken care of. Hire a tree trimmer once every three years to perform a “safety pruning” — this should be done before the leaves emerge, as it is easier to assess the condition of the branches.
Don’t seed until fall
Although it is tempting to plant grass seed in brown spots, if you also apply pre-emergent and weed killer, seeds will not germinate. We recommend fertilizing the lawn instead. Within a few weeks, shoots will begin to grow and fill in any brown spots. Sod is a better choice if the brown spots are too large or you can’t wait.
